Alwinton nestles in the South Eastern foothills of the Cheviots within the beautiful Northumberland National Park, where the rivers Alwin and Coquet meet. This quaint hamlet is ideal for those wishing to explore the Northumberland National Park, Cheviot Hills, and the small surrounding Northumbrian villages - Full of character (and characters!).
Our nearest town is the attractive old market town of Rothbury, with its picturesque tree lined main street and its array of traditional pubs, restaurants and shops, Rothbury is the perfect place to start exploring the county.
Located on the outskirts of Rothbury is Cragside House and gardens. Now a National Trust property, Cragside was the first house in the world to feature electric light. Now open to the public, Cragside makes a great day trip. Another national trust property nearby is Wallington Hall. Recently refurbished, Wallington dates from 1688 and boasts an impressive art collection and magnificent grounds.
The historic town of Alnwick (20 miles away) famous for its castle - where the Harry Potter movies were filmed, is home to the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland, and nearby you will also find the new £14 million Alnwick Gardens, which are open to the public all year round.
A
five-minute drive out of Alnwick will find you on the beautiful
Northumbrian coastline which is laden with many small fishing
communities including Craster (home of the famous Craster kipper),
seahouses and Holy Island.
Ventureing a little further afield, why not visit the bustling city of Newcastle Upon Tyne. Newcastle is one of the best places in the country for shopping and the nearby Metro Centre is the largest shopping centre in Europe, not to mention its famed party style night-life! There are some great restaurants and bars, and for the culture lover, the Baltic art gallery and recently opened Sage music centre provide unmissable sights.
