The Rose & Thistle Inn is a historic former coaching inn, located at the intersection of several ancient Drovers roads linking England to Scotland.
Today the Rose & Thistle is run by Gareth and Jane Latcham, who have expanded and developed the business to include three comfortable, self contained en-suite rooms for holiday accommodation in this beautiful part of the world.
The Rose and Thistle is a traditional country Inn
providing a wide range of drinks, refreshments
and bar meals available in the public
bar area, or in the large function room
with panoramic views out over the surrounding
countryside.
There
are two pool tables, together with a
selection of traditional pub games -
from darts to dominoes! If you'd like
to experience the unique spirit of the
Rose and Thistle in full swing, we'd
suggest a visit during the annual Border
Shepherd Show (held on the second Saturday
of October).
The Border Shepherd Show is the last of the agricultural shows held in the county, and traditionally marked the beginning of Winter. Today, the show is one of the best attended events in the area, with craft tents and pipe bands mixing with livestock displays and sheepdog trails. The Rose and Thistle provides a social hub of the village, and as such attracts many of the participants and visitors to the show. On show nights, you might well be lucky enough to catch an impromptu performance by a local poet or musician!
For those of a more energetic nature, the unique location of the Rose & Thistle Inn is ideal for those wishing to explore the Northumberland National Park, Cheviot Hills, and the many small surrounding Northumbrian villages - By foot or cycle.
For cyclists, why not try the Pennine Cycleway, also known as the 'Spine of England' route, which runs from Derby to Berwick-upon-Tweed through some of the most varied and spectacular scenery in the UK - Including of course, Alwinton!
The Rose and Thistle is also featured in the award-winning guidebook "The Inn Way - Northumberland" by Mark Reid, discovering unique countryside and some of England's best unspoilt public houses. Click

Serious walkers and fell runners will find some of the most challenging and beautiful routes in the country at our very doorstep - Literally out of the door, onto the hills!
The Cheviots challenge takes place every year in August, and is a long distance challenging walk in the Cheviot Hills of Northumberland. Open to walkers and fell runners alike (depending on the level of pain required!), Its purpose is to raise much needed funds for the Northumberland National Park Search and Rescue Team.
